What is acne, what is the cause and how to treat acne?

Acne is a very common skin problem. Acne is characterized by tallow accumulation in the skin and carries the risk of inflammation or infection. The face, back, chest and other parts of the body can be affected by these tallow accumulations. There are various types of acne. It is possible to have multiple tallow accumulations in the skin with no sign of inflammation (comedones or blackheads), but it’s also possible to get inflammation or painful infections. These infections might leave scarring in the skin. To prevent long-term damage to the skin, it is advisable to start treatment as early or soon as possible.

What causes acne?

One cause of acne is excess tallow production, which causes the pores to get clogged and possibly inflamed. Another cause of acne can be thickened skin, making it harder to shed dead skin cells. This can lead to the tallow clogging the pores and inflammation or an infection. Hormonal balance, stress, genetics, makeup or other external factors can stimulate or intensify acne.

Treating acne

There are various treatments available for acne. Other than treating existing acne, there are treatments for prevention and treatments to help reduce acne scars. These are the possibilities:

Noncommittal consult

The first step to treatment is a consult. During this consult all questions can be answered. The skin therapist will inspect the skin problem and create a fitting personal treatment plan, as well as advise on the most suitable and effective treatment for the skin.

Product use

Other than to receive proper treatment, it is also important to take care of the skin. Use skin care products that are specially developed to fight acne. The skin can be cleansed with these products, which will sustain and extend the results of treatment.

Manual cleansing

The skin therapist will use the proper products to cleanse the skin and remove the impurities. The treatment can be completed with an intensive skin mask. The skin therapist will also advise on the proper skin care routine.

Microdermabrasion

The microdermabrasion treatment effectively removes the ‘dead’ top layer of the skin. The skin will be able to properly dispose of tallow and absorb product better.

Peeling

Peelings can be mild or intensive, either fruit acid or chemical. Peelings are effective because of the acids that can reach the deeper skin layers, getting rid of impurities and preventing the pores from getting clogged. Peelings are also effective on discolouration left on the skin as a result from acne.

Dermapen or medical laser

The dermapen or laser is used to treat damage left by acne, such as scars and spots. Miniscule holes are created in the skin, thereby activating the skin and stimulating the growth of connecting tissue. This method treats the scars and spots from inside the skin, resulting in the scars and spots fading or disappearing.

Health insurance coverage

It is very well possible that acne treatments will be covered by your health insurance. The extent of coverage depends on the health insurance provider. You may need a referral from your doctor in order to get the treatment covered. All our skin therapists are AGB-certified.
